The Diverse
Farmers' Market  Customer

Citizens of Oregon are increasingly aware of the desirability of supporting and preserving local food production. At the same time Oregon farmers are increasingly being  threatened by severe price competition in the wholesale and process food markets.

This convergence of city and rural interests creates the opportunity to:

  1. affirm the historic relationship between the urban citizens and local agriculture producers

  2. promote and support Oregon agriculture.

  3. enhance the quality of life in Oregon communities.

The farmers sell fresh, high quality produce directly to a diverse group of shoppers: working families, local chefs, low-income working families, seniors, children of all ages.

In 2003, the Oregon Farmers' Markets Nutrition Programs provided coupons to  over 20,000 Oregon women and children and 12,600 low-income seniors.

At the end of market day, farmers generously donate leftover produce to food banks and affiliates who provide meals for homebound and homeless citizens.
