Why Sell at
Farmers' Markets?
Farm direct marketing helps improves
farmers' income and provides local consumers and
businesses with fresh, high quality produce.
Farmers' markets, in particular, reconnects over
90,000 Oregonians per week in the peak of the
harvest season. This direct relationship
between the producer and the
consumer contributes to strengthening our
local economies.
Researching Farmers' Markets
In 2004, Oregon has 64
farmers' markets. Each farmers' market
builds upon its farmers and community
uniqueness. Key factors to consider when
researching farmers' markets are market
location, opening date, days of operation, and
market hours. Other attributes to consider are demographics, site
accommodations, driving distance from farm, market size, and
the market product mix.
The best way to find an
appropriate market is to visit markets and meet
market managers. Managers can provide farmers with information about
government regulations, licensing and the
market vendor rules. Market rules typically outline
eligible products, stall size, setup and
operations guidelines, fees and application
form. Be sure to ask for an application
form.
As a farmers' market participants,
produce farmers are eligible to participate in the
Oregon
Farmers' Market Nutrition Programs. This
federal/state program serves nutritionally at-risk
families and seniors. In 2003, $1 million
went directly to the farmers through these coupon
programs.
